For the past several months, we have been on a really tight grocery budget and so I had to really be inventive to spread it as far as it would go. These are some recipes that worked out really well for us and we ended up eating rather well! Some of the veggies came from our garden, so they were free!

Spanish Rice

Rice

1 can crushed tomatoes

Mexican seasoning

1/2 - 1 lb. ground beef or turkey

Diced onion

Diced bell pepper

Beans (rinsed & drained)

Make the rice according to package directions for the amount you need, cook in chicken broth if you can afford. Brown the meat and drain. Add the cooked rice, onion, bell pepper and beans to the meat and stir-fry until everything is heated through.

French Bread Spaghetti Bake

1 loaf French bread (get at day old bread store or clearance at Wal-Mart)

1 jar spaghetti sauce

Grated mozzarella cheese

Tear bread into bite size pieces. In a skillet, heat some oil and butter. Toast the bread until golden on all sides. Place bread into the bottom of a casserole dish. Pour spaghetti sauce over the bread. Heat in a 350 oven until heated through. Top with mozzarella and return to oven until cheese is melted.

I know this sounds kind of gross, but it has always turned out REALLY good! I'll make cornbread, biscuits or bread to go with it. Makes a pretty good meal on cold winter days. I've also done it in my crock-pot.

1 lb. ground beef or turkey

2-3 diced tomatoes

1 diced onion

Cook the potatoes, onion and pepper in a little oil until potato is done. Add the meat and brown. Drain. Season to taste. This can spread pretty far by adding more potatoes.

1 lb. ground beef or turkey

2 bell peppers, diced

1 onion diced

3-4 ribs of celery diced

Brown the meat until almost done, drain. Add the vegetables and stir-fry 2-3 minutes before adding the soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Continue to stir fry until vegetable are crisp-tender and meat if done. I've also done this with shredded cabbage and thinly sliced carrots.

2 lb. hot cooked Macaroni

1 can stewed tomatoes, undrained

1 lb. bacon

Vinegar

Cook the bacon crisp and break into small pieces. In a large bowl mix together all ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add a splash of vinegar to taste.

Tuna Pie with Gravy

1 can tuna

1 egg

1 tuna can of milk

Parsley

2 pie crusts (one for the top and bottom)

1 can cream of mushroom soup

Mix together first 4 ingredients and cook in a saucepan for just a few minutes, stirring all the time. Place 1/2 the pie crust into the bottom of a pie plate. Pour in tuna filling and top with remaining piecrust. Cut slits into top piecrust. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes. Meanwhile, pour the soup into a saucepan and add 1/3 can of milk or water. Heat, but don't allow to boil. Cut pie into wedges and serve with gravy poured over top.

In our society, food is not scarce any more. On the contrary, food is available and is easy to get. This leads our children to consume fast food and snacks in quantities that may harm their health and could result in our children being fat and unhealthy adults.

As parents it is our responsibility to feed our children well, and teach them eating habits that will serve them all their lives, and will help them be the healthy and happy people we want them to be.

It is not a secret that the food we consume as adults and our state of health is the outcome of the food we had when we were kids.

Cooking for kids is not at all a heavy task. As long as we know how to do it, when we have recipes for children, healthy cooking is easy and fun.

Children, like grownups, like tasty food, they eat first with their eyes and appreciate what is on their plate. It is our tendency to think that they do not feel or see all this, but even if they do not express it, in their subconscious, they do.

Basic Digital Photography Guide - Easy to Understand

Today is digital era. Digital cameras are now being more produced than analogue cameras. With its easiness and low cost in developing, many people buy digital cameras.

Compact cameras are mostly used by traveler. It is fully automatic. Just press the shutter and you have the picture.

Well, if you want to start learning photography, it is better to use a camera that is not fully automatic (at least there are P, A(or Av), S(or Tv), M shooting mode).

1. Basic Digital Photography Guide: Aperture

The aperture or blend opening has the same function as pupil in our eyes. The bigger the opening, the more light you will get.

In the front side of the lenses, there are numbers such as f/2.8-f/3.2. This number refers to the blend opening. Small number represents big opening (example: f/2,8 or smaller number) and big number represents small opening (example: f/8 or bigger number).

The big opening gives you more light and vice versa. It is very useful to own a lens with big opening especially in low light situation.

Beside the light exposure, the aperture also determines the Depth of Field (DOF). Wait a minute... DOF? What is that? Deep of Field determine the sharp area in a photo. The sharp area is in front and back of the focus area.

2. Basic Digital Photography Guide: Shutter Speed:

Shutter speed determines how long is the light exposure. Logically, the longer the exposure, the more light the sensor will receive.

If we want to shoot an object that moving pretty fast, use the high shutter speed, e.g: 1/200 second. Using low shutter speed in such case will not guarantee you to take sharp images of the moving object. The long exposure time normally used to take picture at night or low light condition.

A small but fascinating tip: If you shoot streets where many cars passing by at night, you will get a fantastic picture. Try it by yourself.

If you want to use the low shutter speed, especially when you take pictures of buildings or steady objects, use a tripod or put the camera on platform that is stable.

3. Basic Digital Photograph Guide: ISO/ASA:

ISO is a term which is used for the films (analogue cameras), and today the digital cameras use sensor. But this term "ISO" is also used in digital photography which determines the light sensitivity of the sensor.

High ISO speed (e.g: 400 or 800) gives you more possibility to take photos in low-light condition, because the light sensor is more sensitive than the low ISO speed (e.g: 100)

In digital camera, the ISO speed can be set manually and automatically.

The disadvantage using high ISO speed is noise. It also depends on the size of the camera sensor. The smaller the sensor, the more noise will appear. That is why when you take pictures with DSLR, the pictures seemed to be less noisy than if you use a digital pocket camera.

I usually use the low ISO speed (normally 100 or 200), because I want to prevent the noise. In some situation I use ISO 400 or 800.

Let's take a closer look at perfumes. The perfume that you buy in a store normally consists of a mixture of essential oils blended with alcohol which acts as a carrier for the perfume. The alcohol evaporates on contact with air and that is what gives off the perfume.

Many people do not like alcohol based cosmetics and that is a good reason to make your own perfumes. Alcohol based products can be harsh on the skin and in some people cause allergies.

But nor should you used essential oils on the skin undiluted. They are just too strong. Only lavender oil can be used directly in undiluted form on your skin. Even then you should avoid exposing the skin to sunlight. There is a danger of sun burn if you do.

What you need to do is dilute the essential oils with a carrier oil. There are many suitable oils. Almond oil is a good choice because it is light and not too sticky. But any vegetable oil will do as the base for your perfume. Scented olive oil can be very nice as a body rub so long as you allow it time to dry before dressing.

Essential oils can be bought in specialist fragrance stores and in some wholefood stores. They come in little brown glass bottles. The colour of the glass is important, because essential oils deteriorate when they are exposed to sunlight. So keep it is best to keep them in a dark place.

Plastic bottles are not a good idea because the essential oils react with the plastic. So always use glass. If you see essential oils being sold in anything other than dark glass bottles they are probably not essential oils. If they are they will contain impurities from the plastic container.

You should always bottle your own perfumes in dark glass containers. If a brown bottle looks unappealing to you then put your artistic skills into designing an attractive label. A hand made label will add something extra special to a gift of home made perfume. List the ingredients and the date you made it because essential oils deteriorate when they are exposed to the air.

Essential oils are very volatile. They are the oils contained in plants that give them their smell. If you walk through a lavender field on a hot day what you smell are the essential oils contained in lavender. They respond to heat and light.

All plants have these essential oils but some have more than others. They each have different effects on us. Some like lavender are soothing, others like citrus oils are invigorating. Sometimes you may want to make a perfume from just one type of essential oil. Sometimes you will want to blend them to ge the effect you want.

As you develop your skills you will find that you develop a nose. Your sense of smell will become more discriminating. Once you have got used to the palette of smells available you will be able to mix varied perfumes that suit particular occasions and different people.

Once a unit has been designed, the next development step is to design the unit tests. An important point here is that it is more rigorous to design the tests before the code is written. If the code was written first, it would be too tempting to test the software against what it is observed to do (which is not really testing at all), rather than against what it is specified to do. A unit test specification comprises a sequence of unit test cases. Each unit test case should include four essential elements:

1. A statement of the initial state of the unit, the starting point of the test case (this is only applicable where a unit maintains state between calls);

2.The inputs to the unit, including the value of any external data read by the unit;

3. What the test case actually tests, in terms of the functionality of the unit and the analysis used in the design of the test case (for example, which decisions within the unit are tested);

4. The expected outcome of the test case (the expected outcome of a test case should always be defined in the test specification, prior to test execution).

The following subsections of this paper provide a six step general process for developing a unit test specification as a set of individual unit test cases. For each step of the process, suitable test case design techniques are suggested. (Note that these are only suggestions. Individual circumstances may be better served by other test case design techniques).

Step 1 - Make it Run

The purpose of the first test case in any unit test specification should be to execute the unit under test in the simplest way possible. When the tests are actually executed, knowing that at least the first unit test will execute is a good confidence boost. Automatic drawing was used by the surrealists like Andre Masson as a means to express their subconscious thoughts. They may look like childish scribbles on the surface but there is great method behind it. By allowing 'chance accidents' to take over the creation process and by freeing the hand to more or less travel as it will, it frees the artwork from a lot of conscious control. Thus the drawing would be in part, a creation of the subconscious, portraying something that would otherwise be repressed. These drawings would feature art that appear disjointed, random or lacking any cohesive form. These were said to be creations of a rationality beyond rationality. However even artists such as Masson would argue that automatic drawing was not completely automatic as the artist had to exert certain conscious intervention to make the artwork. Acceptable on a visual level or even slightly comprehensible. Masson believed that his breed of automatic drawing combined processes of conscious and unconscious activity. DIY XBox 360 Repair

It's every XBox 360 owners worst nightmare. You decide to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon playing your favorite game, but when you turn on the console, up come the three red lights of doom.

It's a common XBox 360 problem that many owners have been faced with, and it's caused by a design flaw built into the console. You see the XBox 360 suffers from the problem of overheating. In conditions of low airflow and higher temperatures the console builds up too much heat which then melts the solder on the circuit board causing a condition known as a dry joint. The circuit is broken, and the XBox displays the fault as the red ring of death, also known as rrod.

The only solution to this problem is to repair the XBox 360. Turning it on and off won't help. Letting the console cool down for a while won't help either.

You'll either need to send the console back to Microsoft for repair, or you'll have to fix it yourself.

If you choose to go the DIY route, you should not attempt the towel repair method. You do this by wrapping your XBox 360 in a towel and turning it on for a while and then taking the towel off and letting the machine cool down. This is effectively doing the same thing that caused the fault in the first place. You overheat the console and hope the solder melts and flows back into place, correcting the fault.

While some people have reported success with this method, it's really quite a stupid thing to do to your expensive gaming console. Even if it works, you drastically reduce the lifespan of your XBox 360.

You see all electronics are rated to operate in a certain temperature range. Operating outside the specified range damages them. If they don't fail immediately, the damage reduces the lifetime of the component. A lifetime of tens of years could be reduced to months, weeks, or even days.

The best method for DIY repair is to dismantle your XBox 360. You then need to remove the heatsinks from the circuit board and do a small adjustment to the mounting brackets (the cause of the problem.) You should also be using a guide for this process. There are several XBox 360 repair guides available. I recommend, the 3 Red Light Fix repair guide. It goes into all the steps necessary to fix the rod problem.

The next step is to heat up the circuit board with a heat gun or hair dryer. Yes. You are heating up the sensitive components, so care is needed, but it's a lot more selective than the towel method and less prone to complete meltdown.

Finally, reassemble your XBox 360, hold your breath, and turn it on. If all has gone well, you have several healthy looking green lights on the front panel.

Cost Factors of Forensic Animations

In the past, many companies were quoting animations based on a dollar per second rate for finished footage and there appears to be a trend away from this method of pricing. Part of the reason is that the amount of work involved in producing one second of animation can vary enormously depending on what is required and the level of realism. The advances in computer visualization technology available today are mainly responsible for the widening gap between what was possible and what is possible today.

The best thing one can do is educate themselves on what parts of the animation process are the most time intensive and where they can expect to pay the most (or least) for the requirements.

Below is a breakdown of several cost factors that are "tangible". As with any outsourced service, you also pay for reputation, experience and overhead costs, but these are more difficult to quantify. The greatest cost in a forensic animation is the number of man-hours required to prepare, assemble, edit and finalize the animation. Since vehicle collisions are the most common forensic animations, most of the examples used below will reflect this particular example, however, the process and cost factors are more or less the same regardless if the animation being produced is of a crime scene, personal injury case, or medical procedure.

1. Information Gathering and Preparation

During the initial stages of a forensic animation, it is imperative that the animator be brought up to speed on the details of the case. This often means that all photos, video, drawings and reports must be provided to the animator and they must subsequently go through all the materials of the case. Initially, it is helpful to bring the animator into the initial discussions about the trial strategy and what is the objective of the animation. Further, it is useful to have the animator contact the accident Reconstructionist as applicable to go over details of the accident report and if there will be any transfer of other data such as a digital site survey or simulation data.

Where applicable, the animator may be required to travel to the location of where an accident or crime may have occurred. This is to obtain subsequent images and information that may not have been obtained or was not available in the existing scene materials or reports.

2. 3D Models - Recreating the scene assets.

Normally, it is very rare that a forensic animator can reuse the main 3D models in a scene. In the case of an automobile collision, there could be some "standard" 3D models reused such as a stop sign, traffic lights or electrical poles, but there are often times when even these smaller objects must also be built from scratch in order to obtain the highest level of realism.

There are typically three types of 3D models in a forensics animation. These are classified by their level of importance, accuracy and necessary level of detail. Primary objects are those that are directly involved in the animation. Think of them as your primary characters. Secondary objects are those which may not be directly involved, but their movement or relative position plays some part in making the animation accurate or credible. Tertiary objects are those which are strictly for the benefit of visualization and do not play a direct role in the animation. An example could be a tree off in the distance which would not affect the animation if it were removed except for the level of realism.

Creating accurate and realistic primary 3D models is still a time intensive task which has not changed very much over the years. The quality of the models and options associated with the level of realism are greater and therefore, there is an equivalent amount of time required to create the models. Where possible, it may be possible to purchase an existing 3D model and tailor it to suit the needs of the animation. This should only be done when the accuracy of the model is not a requirement and it may be a secondary or tertiary object in the scene.

In the case of a vehicle collision, the ground terrain is a good example of a large scale model which is required to be accurate and a true likeness of the actually area where the collision occurred.

Often, modeling may come from other sources such as CAD files, 3d scanning or photogrammetry. In each case, the model normally requires subsequent work to get the correct look or to adjust the surface topology of the object.

3. Mapping - Preparing and adjusting images

Although this could be classified as part of modeling, it is in fact a separate part of the 3D modeling process which involves the use of photo imaging software. If you were to consider a simple example of a stop sign, there is the geometrical portion of the model and there is the "textured" or "mapped" portion of the object. The red colour of the sign with the letters S-T-O-P is normally not modeled but need to be mapped. Mapping can be accomplished by taking an existing photo of the stop sign and extracting only the portion of the image that relates to the sign itself and not the background. In some cases, photos need not be used at all and the entire image map of the stop sign could be made with a program like Photoshop.

Since photos are often taken at various angles and depth of fields, the image needs to be rectified (i.e. any depth removed such that the image becomes orthographic or "flat") so that it can be pasted like a sticker onto the model.

However, in each case, there is a considerable amount of time committed to the process of editing photo images to extract usable maps for models and the more accurate, and realistic one wants their models to look, the more it will cost.

4. Assembling the Scene

Once all the scene objects have been created, there comes the task of assembling them accurately in the scene. Since accuracy is the single most differentiating point between any animation and a forensic animation, there is a considerable emphasis on the placement of objects and positioning of all the scene elements. In some cases, there are automated utilities to help the animator reduce the amount of time to place objects, but unfortunately, since each forensic animation is different, this is normally done through manual means. Hence, if there are many objects to be accurately placed in a scene, the amount of labour involved increases.

5. Animating the Scene

There are two ways to animate a scene. One is through the import of simulation data and the other is through keyframing. Keyframing is a manual technique where an object is fixed at a certain location at a certain time of the animation. At each point in the animation where the object is "fixed", this is called a keyframe. The 3D animation software interpolates between keyframes to distribute the motion.

A complex scene involving 5 or 6 vehicles would be more involved than a simple animation of 2 vehicles crashing since there are many more vehicles and positions to keep track of. Since there are many clients who request different collision scenarios, there may be several iterations or versions of the animation.

6. Lighting and Special Effects

Once the entire scene has been animated, this is normally the time to adjust the lighting and prepare any effects which might be required in the animation. When trying to replicate the exact lighting of a scene based on reference photos it can often be very difficult to achieve. Consider the range of lighting and weather conditions such as fog, rain, snow or night scenes.

When appropriate, it may be necessary to show breaking glass or skid marks. Creating accurate looking effects is a time consuming process. Normally, it is difficult to quantify something as "accurate" unless it is verified by an expert. For this reason, there could be several iterations of the lighting and special effects in order to match the expert's report/testimony.

7. Rendering

The act of rendering is how the 3D animation software converts the entire scene into a set of images which run (typically) at 30 frames per second. Depending on the complexity of the scene (i.e. complexity of items 1-6 above), a computer can render a single image at anywhere from a few seconds to an hour or more for each frame. Considering that a 1 minute animation has 1,800 frames, the time involved can be as little as 5 hours to 60 hours on a single computer.

Additionally, if there are 5 or 6 different views to be rendered and not taking any edits into account, the rendering portion can take a considerable amount of time.

Fortunately, many animators make use of either render farms (i.e. network of computers strung together that divide the work of rendering) or invest in high powered workstations. There are firms which specialize in providing rendering resources to animators and when a quick turnaround is required, this is an additional expense which is normally translated to the client.

Normally, rendering only makes up less than ten percent of the total cost of an animation. The actual time is dependent on the type of hardware used and this is part of the reason why companies have been moving away from quoting animations based on their length or dollar per second of completed footage.

8. Video Editing and Final Packaging

As the animation approaches the final stages of completion, the last few steps are the editing and compositing of the animation. The addition of any text, title screens, overlaying images and making any adjustments to the colour take additional time which is normally associated with how the animation is to be packaged and presented.

Most people today are finding that downloads and CD's are quite useful for viewing on a computer, however, if a client requests a self running DVD with menus and sound then this is obviously another involved step.

9. Changes and Edits

One of the most overlooked parts of creating a quality animation and avoiding constant changes is to ensure that clear objectives are understood by all parties up front.

Changing the animation half way through a project can substantially affect the total cost and may delay the delivery considerably. Knowing exactly what needs to be shown and limiting the number of edits keeps things on track and limits the risk of cost overruns.

The basic rule of thumb for the cost of a forensic animation is that as the level of detail, realism, accuracy and number of scenarios increases , so does the cost. A complex animation with many details means more preparation, production and verification hours for the animator.

A forensic animation can range widely from $3,000 to $30,000 depending on each of the factors explained above. There are no hard rules to pin down the price of an animation since each one is "custom built".

Be sure to get a clear idea of the costs by providing the initial case information to the animator. Most reputable forensic animators will supply an initial consultation at no cost in order to provide an accurate quotation or to tell you if an animation is even feasible. Also, ensure that clear objectives are set prior to embarking on a forensic animation. This will avoid unnecessary changes, increased cost and will keep projects on track.

Is a Sony CyberShot DSC-W200 Worth the Money?

A question I asked myself before is whether a major manufacturer of digital cameras can make one that costs less than $250 and works like it should. The company I'm talking about here is Sony, and the model is Cybershot DSCW200, an ultra compact camera, which costs a bit too much for the category that it's in.

The biggest concern when it comes to digital cameras is the quality of the image they can take. The DSCW200 doesn't exactly have a stellar performance in this department. On paper, the camera looks great, with 12 megapixels, but this is way too much for an ultra compact. It's just too much for an ultra compact digital camera, so ignore the marketing here. Those that use ultra compacts will either upload the photos to Facebook or Myspace, or they will view them on the LCD directly. This can be accomplished with a 6 megapixel camera easily. With 12 you can get a very large photo, which is something that people will never get to use.

Considering the price of the camera, I expected a lot more from the LCD of this camera. Too bad that Sony went the cheap way here and put only 115,000 pixels on the LCD, which is 2.5 inch. The quality of the picture looks grainy on the LCD and seeing it from an off angle doesn't work that well. If you want examples, the cameras that Canon produces in the same category have 230,000 pixels on a 3 inch LCD.

It's a small problem, but I'm still going to mention it. This camera comes with a proprietary USB cable, which means it's only produced by a single company. I like being able to choose.

The review is not over yet though. There are plenty of things that are wrong with this camera and you can see them all below:

- insufficient zoom from the zoom lens

- too many megapixels, which nobody uses and which get the price high

- the flash is slow to recharge

- can be used easily only by people with small hands

- if you want face detection, you need to use the auto mode, but it doesn't always work even then

- if you're making a video, the zoom will not work

That's about it. All in all, I think you should take a look around before you get a CyberShot DSC-W200.

Low-Light, Slow Shutter Speed, No Flash Photography!

This lighting challenge no longer needs to put fear into a photographer's heart. It's possible to get perfect photos with a digital SLR and a few simple techniques.

Sometimes a flash brings you sunlight and then there are times when using a flash just takes away the mood of the moment. At times light voids the image of emotion. Like an artist poised in front of a blank canvass, the photographer chooses light, color, texture and shape to portray their Photo Art to share with the world.

I love to capture candid, journalistic style images of people during highly emotive events such as weddings and milestone birthdays. Take my lead and sit or crouch in a corner, almost invisible to the subjects and capture a loving look, a comforting touch or a smile that lights up the room. To capture these candid images and maintain your anonymity, you have to be non-intrusive. Using a camera flash defeats that purpose. In fact, a flash can be quite annoying to the subjects as well as any others present.

Using a flash captures the moment and then stops the subject cold (to collect themselves) before going on. The flash is not conducive to spontaneity and a natural flow of action. Capturing the energy of a live band performance is always an exciting project. There is the uncertainty of lighting, obstruction by instruments, equipment and people, and not knowing how each song will bring out the emotions of the artists. Imagine the bad reception you would get if you, as the band photographer, started poppin' flashes during the performance! Oooouch! Now that would be a mood wrecker, wouldn't it?

In 'use the available light' situations you should be brave! Be bold! Shoot no-flash with confidence. Shoot without a tripod or unipod to stabilize the camera. Wow! Is this really possible? Yes my friend it is!

I have achieved great results with all these lenses in low-light, no-flash situations. You can achieve this with film, but with digital you get to instantly view the shot and can make adjustments to create some funky photo art. Plus with a digital SLR you can use the rapid fire feature and guarantee that one of the images will be perfect. And the no developing, no negatives means no cost for snapping a lot of digital images. Play the odds!

A few tips

set your ISO speed to 400 or Higher - I shoot at ISO 400
set Drive Mode to continuous shooting you'll be using rapid fire often
use Tv (shutter priority) or M (Manual Exposure) - experiment using both shutter modes
use both Auto Focus and Manual Focus on your lens remember Auto Focus sometimes is too slow to work properly in low-light environments
you will be free-shooting at aperture speeds of 1/20 to 1/8 or lower. Use one of these camera stabilizing techniques: 1) elbows/arms on stable surface even if it is your knee or thigh; 2) arms tight to body and, my favorite; 3) don't breathe when snapping images

Now the fun begins. You will be constantly adjusting aperture speeds and focus every time you point your lens or your subject moves or the light changes. But don't stop shooting!

I have found that if I bring the aperture speed down to where the camera indicates you don't need a flash (1/15), I will shoot multiple photos at that speed and then also shoot some at 1/20 and 1/10. Remember to meter on the subject not the light. You will be surprised at the different colors and emotions you capture by manually bracketing the shots this way. Again, experiment. Have fun! Keep moving around. Get a lot of close-up shots. Use the light source that comes from where ever or what ever (e.g. stage lights, candlelight, window light, flash light, fire light). Take lots of pictures. Move around your subject(s). Take more pictures. This is just too much fun!

At these slow aperture speeds you will get some blur. This effectively captures motion and adds an very artistic touch to your photos.

Couple your ability to frame a shot with the post production capabilities of Picasa by Google, and you will create some incredible Foto Art.

What is 3D Animation? How is it Different From 2D Animation?

In this article I will explain in simple terms, what goes behind the 3D animation that you watch in movies and what makes it different from conventional two dimensional animation.

What is that extra 3rd dimension? Take a piece of paper and sketch a simple figure on it (a cat, a dog or anything that comes to your head). Lets say it is a cat and it is facing you from that sheet of paper. So you have the front view of the cat in front of you. Suppose if you feel that you want to see the cat from a side, will it help if you rotate the paper or flip it? No. Why? It is simply because the sketch you have drawn has the 3rd dimension missing.

Every real world object that you see around has a 3rd dimension and that is the reason why you can take it and rotate it to watch it from different angles. The sketch you have drawn had a length and a width, since the paper you used to draw also had a length and a width. But it lacks a thickness (3rd dimension) and hence your sketch also didnt have that extra dimension.

Suppose instead of sketching your imagination down on the piece of paper, you decided to sculpt it on a handful of clay. Since the medium you used (clay) had volume, you had to define the cats shape from all angles during the sculpting. Hence you unknowingly added that 3rd dimension to it and that is the reason you have the freedom to rotate it any way you want.

How conventional 2D animation works:

Before computers started playing their indispensible roles in the animation industry, everything was done manually by animators, who were essentially artists. They would create a series of slides having images on it, where each slides image is the continuation of the previous one in the sequence. For example if an animator wanted to simulate a ball falling down, they would create a sequence of slides where first slide would portray the ball at the top. The next slide will show the ball, may be 1 cm lower than that in the first slide. In the next one, again lower and so on, till the last slide shows the ball hitting the ground. When the whole sequence of slides are shown in front of the viewer in a fast rate, it creates the feeling of the ball falling down.

The whole process was tedious and time consuming. When computers came into play, the frame redrawing works had been minimised since, copying and pasting duplicate elements between successive frames was very easy with the computers aid. The artist has to make only the necessary changes that should exist between successive frames. As technology advanced, softwares evolved that again minimised the work of a 2d animator, in such a way that several things started getting automated. Using motion tweening and other techniques, an animator can set the initial position or shape of an object and then its final position and shape and the computer would generate the intermediate frames automatically. The artist even has the freedom to make corrections to that.

What was missing in 2D animation?

The 2D animation always lacked the essence, since all the real-world sceneries and objects are 3D and when they gets transformed to 2D, they lose their reality. Later stage cartoons started to simulate the 3D effect by using gradients, and varying highlights, but it required huge extra effort from the part of the artist.

How 3D Graphics works:

The stages in 3D animation are more in number compared to the 2D animation. The first part of 3D animation starts with character sketching and 3D modeling. In the next stage the characters are rigged for animation. In the next stage they are animated. This is in fact a too compact form of what happens in the background. Lets see each of them in a little detail.

Character sketching: This is the stage where an artist sketches how the character should look from various angles. Usually the sketch will be done on paper or canvas. As many variations in poses are created so that it would help the 3D Modeler to sculpt a 3D Model out of it.

Character Modeling: A 3D artist, who is expertised in a 3D modeling and animating tool, will examine the sketches and starts sculpting the figure using his imagination and skill. I used the word sculpting because the process is much similar to the real sculpting we do with raw materials like clay. The software tool that the artist uses provides various approaches to perform the modeling. Usually organic modeling techniques like Polygonal Modeling (a polygon is subdivided to get the desired shape), NURBS modeling (curves are arranged to create a surface flowing through them), Subdivisional Modeling (A hybrid blend between polygonal modeling and NURBS modeling) are used. In these modeling techniques, the 3D modeling artist will sculpt out the characters shape in 3D using a set of tools provided by the 3D modeling software, by following any of the above mentioned approaches.

The 3D Model obtained finally will be in an editable form and the model will be dependent on the approach used. For example a NURBS technique will yield a 3D Model in the NURBS representation (curves and surfaces). Once the modeling is complete, the artist converts it into the basic polygonal mesh (vertices alone). The polygonal mesh is nothing but a huge number of polygons that are arranged so as it forms the whole character. This conversion to polygonal mesh offers many advantages like faster rendering speed, and multi-software compatibility.

Scene building: In addition to the characters the animation will have an environment and related objects. The 3D modeling software provides methods to simulate the environment, model the world , sun etc. For example in the 3d modeling and animation software called Maya, the artist have a huge library of Paint effects that contains Trees, leaves etc from which he can drag and drop into a scene and customize it in accordance to needs.

Texturing: During this stage, all the objects in the scene are given suitable textures using the 3D animation tools specific facilities. Some tools provide only facilities for mapping an image texture on to the 3d model, whereas advanced tools even let you paint on the 3d meshs texture surface.

Lighting and Camera setup:

This process is much like that in a real world movie making. The 3D animation software provides different types of lights which you can place in the scene in any direction you want. You can adjust the intensity, cone angle or even the shadow cast by the individual lights. Camera also is the replica of the real camera we use for shooting. We can place multiple cameras in a scene; adjust its focal length, aperture size and almost every parameter that you can find in a real camera.

Animation: Once the static elements have been set, the 3D artist applies motion to them. This process, called animation is performed by setting keyframes. In order to animate a ball falling, the animator would set the first key frame at say 0th second with the balls position at the initial top position. He would set the next key at say 5th second with the balls position touching the ground. The 3D animation software interpolates the balls falling action between the 0th and 5th seconds. The animator can customize the interpolation behavior using graphs or by setting intermediate keys.

In Character animation, similar principles are applied. The skeleton will be animated by the animator and the 3d mesh skinned to the skeleton gets animated automatically. Character animation is often aided by plug-in tools (e.g.: biped) that has been created specifically for creating character animation sequences like walking or running cycles. The various scene elements, cameras and lights are animated using basic key-frame animation, based on the story board requirements.

Rendering:

Once the scenes are animated, it will undergo a process called rendering, in which the 3d representation is converted to a video format, which can be read and edited using professional video editing software.

Editing and mixing:

The rendered scenes are imported into video editing software and edited. In the case of movies where the human characters need to interact with an animated character, proper mixing is done at this stage, though the 3D scene creation would have been done with that aim in mind, using techniques like motion tracking.

The advantages of 3D animation:

You might have wondered why we should go after the 3D animation, when the whole process itself takes a number of stages and appears to be very complex. Apart from the complexities involved, it does offer a lot of advantages. Once the modeling process is completed, the 3D software allows very flexible control over the scene and animation. In this article we will look into what the 3D modeling is all about. We will see the subject in general, and then dig into the details and inspect the various techniques employed in the modeling process.

If you have seen a sculpture ever in your life, you already know quite a little about 3D Modeling. 3D Modeling is nothing but the creation of a character or a model having three dimensions (as in real world) using the techniques and tools provided by a computer software. The software we use for the purpose will be a 3D Modeling and animation tool like 3DS Max, Maya, SoftImage etc. The tool will provide a set of tools that a 3D artist can use to sculpt or model, an object in his imagination, into a 3d computer representation. This 3D model can be altered, animated or rendered into a movie in accordance to the artists need. This is what 3D modeling is, if we look it from a broad top view.

Lets dig a bit deeper:

Every 3D Model in computer representation is composed of polygons. The polygons may have three or more vertices and such hundreds or thousands or even millions of polygons may comprise a 3D Model. So is it like, a 3D artist draws each and every polygon as such? Fortunately, no! Here comes the softwares like 3DS Max and Maya to our rescue. These 3d modeling packages provide a wide variety of modeling tools that an artist can use for creating a polygonal model. The artist will usually draw the outlines that define the models shape in three dimensions, and the software will tesselate that into a polygonal mesh. All that an artist has to do is define the 3 dimensional profile of the character he has in his imagination. There are a number of modeling techniques that are widely used. Lets go through them one by one:

Primitive Modeling: This is a very basic modeling technique and hence has several draw backs too. The software tool like 3DS Max, Maya etc provides a set of 3D primitives like spheres, boxes etc. The artist alters these shapes to suit his/her character modeling needs, using lattices, deformers etc. For example, a human head can be modeled using an altered sphere, a neck using an altered cylinder etc. This modeling technique is more suitable for building objects like houses, furniture etc rather than, for live organic modeling, since the shapes appear distinct and the blend of various body parts will not be seamless.

NURBS Modeling: NURBS stands for Non Uniform Rational Bspline. Dont get scared by the name. In the nutshell, it is nothing but a mathematical curve, represented using a set of equations. If we see this modeling technique from an outer view, all we see is a set of simple curves that we call NURBS. How the 3d tool implemented it we dont need to care much (too much mathematics). These curves are very flexible and have control points on them which we can use to change its shape.

Suppose you want to model a human head using NURBS modeling, you will start with an outline shape and then draw a number of curves extending from one side of the profile shape to the other end, separated by spaces. These curves define the shape of the figure. These NURBS curves can be joined to form a 3D NURBS surface. The NURBS modeling has its advantages and disadvantages. It is an easy to model approach, since the NURBS curves are easy to manipulate. But this modeling technique has very limited extensibility. Suppose you want to add an extra limb to your alien creature after the modeling is complete, it will become extremely difficult, if you choose NURBS modeling.

Surface Modeling: This is a widely adopted modeling technique used primarily for organic modeling. In this modeling technique, the 3D artist creates a spline cage profile for the 3D character. The splines intersect between each other, creating a completely closed profile of the character, unlike the NURBS technique. Once the spline cage is complete, the 3D artist can apply a surface modifier on this spline cage, which creates a 3D filling surface out of the 2D splines. This method has the advantage that it can be extended to adapt to varied requirements, during any stage of the modeling process. This offers a lot of flexibility to the artist. This technique is used widely in 3D animation softwares like 3DS Max.

Polygonal Modeling: This is one of the very few modeling techniques that can be used for various modeling scenarios. This modeling technique is used both in organic and inorganic modeling. The basic principle behind this modeling technique is as follows. The 3D artist draws the shape of the model he wants to create using the polygon tool. Then the polygon will get subdivided and extruded, so that the model gets the 3D form. This process of subdividing and extruding continues until the whole model is completed. In this modeling technique the artist in fact creates a polygonal mesh himself. But this polygonal model will have the minimal number of polygons only, and it will be far from a smooth and perfect figure. After this stage, the artist would apply a smoothing modifier on this polygon model, which converts the model into a realistic and smooth looking character.

Sub-division Modeling: This is a hybrid modeling technique, which inherits the merits of both NURBS modeling and Polygonal Modeling. It also offers a host of other enhancements. In sub-divisional modeling, the artist usually starts with a polygonal model itself. The polygonal model that has been already created is converted into a sub-divisional model. The sub-divisional model has control points and lattices that can be pulled and moved, to alter the original polygonal model that lies beneath. This modeling technique also permits the artist to select the level of refinement to be done in a particular area. Hence those areas requiring higher detail can be assigned with more control points and higher no: of vertices, whereas the other areas will remain with a base vertex density. This gives significant performance boost.

Conclusion:

The above discussed modeling techniques are used by the 3d artist to create a model that he has in his imagination. The model obtained through these modeling techniques will be dependent on that specific modeling technique. Such a model is converted into a pure polygonal mesh and is rigged and animated based on the requirements. During the stage called rendering, the scene which contains many such polygonal models, gets converted to a two dimensional image or a movie by the 3D animation softwares rendering engine.

After finally managing to mount the new LCD TV on the wall of my living room I sat back to admire my new toy. As pretty as it looked hanging there in mid air, I realised that I was going to have to do something about the dangling wires. The black and red tubes sprouting from the back of the TV were hanging like unwelcome snakes from the branch of a tree, right down from the middle of my cream coloured wall and onto the carpet.

After contemplating my predicament for half an hour I realised that I had one of two choices. Either I could learn to live with the wires as they were (possibly painting the entire living room in a darker colour so as to blend in with the rubbery cables) or I could buy something to stick in front of them.

I had already spent a small fortune on the TV however I didn't much fancy the task of painting the whole of my living room another colour just to camouflage a few unsightly wires. Taking what I thought was the more sensible of the two options I hopped on the computer to try and find some shelf fitments that I could put in under the TV. It would have to be something big because the TV was quite high on my wall and I would need it to house the DVD player and the freeview box, then there was also the XBOX and the Playstation to think about.

After a week or so of scouring the web (I live in a rural area so choice of furniture shops are minimal) I eventually found something that looked almost ideal. The measurements fitted perfectly and the colour of the wood would be perfectly in keeping with the rest of my living room furniture.

After buying and paying for the piece I waited eagerly for its delivery. Taking a day off work on the estimated arrival date I sat by the front door and waited. After a few hours a huge truck pulled up outside and a hairy looking man popped out holding a clipboard. When the formalities were over I helped him carry the box to my door, thanked him and left.

After a few hours of assembling I pushed the new fitment across the carpet and under the television. It fitted perfectly and looked brilliant. The varnished wood creating a pleasant reflection from the television on it's highly polished surface.

I sighed and stood back to admire my work, made a cup of tea and sat down with the remote control. It was then that I discovered a problem.

The shelf fitment was a crucial centimetre too high. To change the channel with the remote control I had to stand up to point the buttons at the right part of the TV, completely taking away the actual point of having a remote control. A semi remote it now was.

I bought the LCD to improve my quality of life. I guess I'll have to settle for stronger thigh muscles.

If you're designing and building a home movie theater, you need to think about creating a fantastic sound environment with your home theater speaker placement. You'll find that five speakers and a subwoofer are standard with most surround sound systems.

For truly immersive sound that makes you feel like you're really "there," you'll need smaller speakers set up both behind and in front of your listeners. The best placement of these speakers can involve calculations based on sound waves and physics.

Today I walked into a well-known PC store with the intention of buying a PDF writer. I left with what I now trust will be the final answer to my analogue prayers - a Digiscribble.

A "mobile, digital notetaker", using a simple memory receiver unit and "PC pen" transmitter, the Digiscribble claims to convert handwritten notes to typed text for direct processing into Windows XP and Vista. It recognises 15 languages and gets to know your handwriting 'quirks'. Intelligent stuff.

The effervescent in-store salesman exalted that even his scribble was legible to the receiver. Good. Because years of childhood schooling in pen poise and neat, cursive writing has been obliterated by incessant keyboard use to the extent that even holding a pen now for more than 10 minutes gives me arthritic-like finger cramps. Any hand-writing analyst could be forgiven for having serious, (and - I must point out - unjustifiable), concerns for my mental wellbeing.

After a visceral journalistic grounding that has taught me never to leave home without notebook and pencil, I am expecting much of its promised "handwriting revolution". I don't always schlep a laptop around and, in fact, often find that I become more inspired by observations and ideas when I'm out of a PC environment.

Like leaving a notepad by the bedside table, ideas often have a Damascus-moment urgency about them and need to be captured there and then, wherever they grab you. This unfortunate urge to scribble last week caused me to spontaneously camp on the floor of WH Smith as if staging a lone protest sit-in against yet more shelf-space being given over to teenage celebrity autobiographies.

If this device can decipher my scrawl that even I find barely legible when faced with the tedious, wasteful task of transcribing it to PC; if it really can detect the 'Umlauts' when I'm penning a note to my wonderful German associate, Uschi, then I shall be proclaiming not only a handwriting revolution, but a veritable miracle!

What we have today are tiny little satellite dishes that are mounted to a roof or garage and are capable of receiving all sorts of data and signals. While these small dishes may not immediately appear to have the same capacity as their "supersized" cousins, they are actually highly tuned units that receive signals from satellites orbiting the Earth. That's right, they receive signals from space!

Of course the signals do not originate from the farthest unknown reaches of the galaxy, but from right here on Earth itself. Remarkably these far distant signals deliver a significantly clearer signal and image than the old analog television broadcasts relied on throughout the history of television. That old system is due to be eliminated in 2009, and the satellite system will be relied on by millions of television viewers to take over.

What exactly is a satellite television system? Basically they are units that receive signals from satellites and then transfer the information to an owner's receiver box, which is plugged into a television set or other appropriate device.

A viewer will need several items to complete their system, but a few of these items they will never see or own. The first is the programming source. This is the location that broadcasts the signal up into space to the waiting satellites. A programming source must first receive data from all of the various networks and channels that people tune into, and only then can it send it all on its way. The channels deliver their programming in two ways - first by direct broadcast to the programming source or by transferring their broadcast via an antenna or cable to the programming source.

These networks charge the programming source for their productions and programs, because the programming source never creates the shows on its own. It owns the rights to the programs however, and it sends them out from its own programming centers. From there they head into space, and then all the way back down to viewer's receiver boxes.

Doesn't all of this travel diminish the quality of the signal? Not in the least, in fact most satellite subscribers are continually amazed by the "movie quality" images and sound they receive from their satellite company. Additionally, most satellite television networks send out many channels of digital music, and the quality of the sound matches the quality of the video programming they broadcast.

3. Buy Used: If youve ever salivated over a Musical Fidelity X-DAC v3 but coughed on its $1000 price tag, then Audiogons used and demo classified and auction marketplace has your cough drop. You can find almost any past or current hi-fi component on Audiogon for a fraction of the suggested retail price. I saved lots of cash on my Anthem MCA-2 amp and bought and sold my old Rogue 66 Pre-amp on Audiogon. Audiophiles are fickle and quick to sell components that just never synergize with their system or were replaced by the latest model.

4. Acoustic Treatments: The room you enjoy music and movies in is acoustically flawed. You can help your ailing room with DIY acoustic treatments that cost a fraction of their equivalent commercial products.

5. Measure Your Sonics: After installing your used stereo separates, ripping all your CDs and acoustically treating your early reflections youll want to measure your results. It seems that barely a day goes by without a new club, bar or restaurant opening in central London. A friend of mine who gets invited to lots of these events because of his job as a reviewer told me that he could easily attend up to 10 events a night if he wanted to, such is the deluge of invites and press releases that arrive on his desk on a daily basis. The fierce competition for valuable press coverage and publicity means that the people who organize these events have to constantly come up with new and innovative ways to make their venue stand out from the crowd. Often this equates to ever more lavish supplies of free food and drink, but my friend reckons that the thing that critics such as him always remember is good entertainment. In fact, he attended an event recently where the quality of the entries paled into insignificance next to the impression caused by the dancers and their dance wear.

The event in question took place at a new bar in the Covent Garden area of England's capital city. Having received the usual invites, he nearly went to another opening around the corner before deciding he would rather go to a bar than a restaurant that evening. When he first arrived at the venue it seemed like there would be little to distinguish it from any other bar in the city. There was the usual free food and drink, as well as the inevitable - and somewhat tiresome - sprinkling of minor celebrities (who add nothing to these events, according to my friend): certainly nothing out of the ordinary, anyway. Indeed, until this point in proceedings my friend was skeptical that this bar would even make it until Christmas. In the previous 12 months he had been to five launch events on this same street and only one of those places was still up and running. Just as my friend was about to write it off as another soulless, generic bar, the dancers took to the stage and changed everything. What immediately grabbed my friend's attention was their dance wear.

Being something of a traditionalist, my friend was more used to seeing dancers in ballet shoes and tutus. This was his first experience of urban dance and, in-keeping with the rest of the evening's events, he was immediately skeptical when the saw the 12-strong dance troupe take to the stage in their dance wear: an array of baggy trousers, hooded tops and baseball caps, all outrageously decorated with vibrant colors and graffiti logos. His first thought was that in desperation, the event organizers must have gone out onto the street and found a bunch of kids to come in and liven up proceedings. But his prejudices were about to be completely turned on their head.

What he saw on that stage was one of the most entertaining performances he had ever seen. It was lively, engaging, innovative and, most importantly, brilliantly choreographed. It just goes to show that you should never judge a book by its cover or, in this case, never judge a group of dancers by their dance wear.

New VIA Processors on the Way

With all the hype around the launch of the new Intel AtomTM processors, you would have thought that these were the only low power processor options for sub-notebook PC's. They are not. VIA already has a range of low power processors, and you'll find one in the HP2133 sub-notebook. The base processor in the HP2133 is a VIA C7-M ULV 1.2GHz and this goes up to 1.6GHz for the top of the range machine, which runs Vista Business. Some of the reviewers of the computer have commented that the machine seems very hot when running, and the fan runs most of the time. The running fan is a large contribution to the low battery life reported on the HP2133.

At Computex, VIA has announced some new processors. They were developed under the codename of Isaiah, but have been rebranded as the VIA Nano processors. They vary in speed from the 1.0 GHz U2300 that has a power consumption of 5 watts to the 1.8 GHz L2100 consuming power at the rate of 25 watts. As a comparison a 25Watt bulb is either very low light, or is one of the new low power usage bulbs. You should notice that the Nano family has the same pin configuration as the C7 processor currently in use in the HP2133. You should expect to see an upgrade to the HP2133 to run the new processors, possible before the end of the summer.

At the moment there are a number of different computer manufacturers and OEM's that are sitting on the fence before committing to either the AtomTM or the Nano processor for a new range of sub-notebooks. One thing is clear, once sales figures are announced for the various sub-notebooks on the market today, many of these manufacturers will want a slice of the sales. They will wait to see what comes of the theoretical power difference between some real machines running real software. It is one thing to run a processor in test conditions, and another to try it out under the real conditions of day by day computing for real users in differing weather and work conditions.

It is commonly known that coffee is a very strong stimulant. Thus, when one feels drowsy, he drinks a cup of coffee. It is one solution to jump start one's systems when it the systems are at the point of resting. Moreover, caffeine is a natural pain killer. In fact, in 1958, he published his methods and findings along with fifty cases of cured cancer patients in a book entitled, A Cancer Therapy: Results of 50 cases.

However, despite his claims of success, still many of his colleagues declared his therapy ineffective. But no matter, many desperate high profile cancer patients and medical practitioners were drawn in by his success claims. However, the US National Cancer Institute reviewed the 50 cancer cases he claimed to have been successfully cured and found no real evidence that his claims were accurate.

But despite that, many people still perform coffee enemas. Yet again, there are no definite evidences that the procedure is indeed beneficial. On the other hand, there are several complications that are believed to be caused by having coffee enemas. These complications include caffeine dependence, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, perforation of the intestine walls, and even intestinal burns due to the temperature of the caffeine solution introduced in the bowel.

Aside from coffee solutions, others use tea or other cleansing herbs instead of plain saline solution in their enemas or colonics. Who Invented Skateboards?

The fact that skateboards exist does not necessarily mean that they were invented by someone. They are one of those phenomena that just seem to have evolved. It is thought that the idea became popular in the 1950's. Originally called sidewalk surfers, they were a hit with the surf community on the west coast. Although it is not known who invented skateboards there are some interesting facts about them that we can pin down to individuals.

We know that skateboards were first sold commercially in 1958 by Bill and Mark Richards. These were pretty basic boards made by fixing roller skate wheels to pieces of wood - there is little that can be changed about this basic construction! This was, not surprisingly, in California, the home of the surfers. Although this is not who invented skateboards, they were probably the first retailers. The fact that skateboards were made popular by the surf community, possible for use when there were no waves and they had nothing to do, is reflected in the shape that the boards are constructed. They are always surfboard shaped, particularly some of the smaller plastic ones that were so popular in the 1960s and 70s.

One other fact that we know is who invented skateboard kicktails. This was Richard Stevenson and he patented the design in 1969. This was as an improvement to the basic design of the boards to help perform tricks by lifting up the front end. This has become an essential part of the modern skateboard.

Another design element that was patented was much more recent. In 1993 a patent was issued for the platform steerable skateboard. This was to a Thomas Welsh. Once again, this is not who invented skateboards, but definitely someone who was instrumental in their evolution.

The basic design of the skateboard does not seem to have one particular, definitive inventor. They were originally just a plank of 4 x 2 on a roller skate. This was probably a roller skate belonging to your sister and, as you can make two skateboards out of her roller skates, it no doubt bought you a friend as well. The chances are that skateboarders of that day were always seen in pairs! As we know, necessity is the mother of invention and perhaps it was someone who could not find both their roller skates who invented skateboards. I do not think that we will ever find an answer.

There are probably many people out there who would claim to know who invented skateboards, and maybe even some who would claim the crown themselves. I actually remember my father telling me a long time ago that he used to fasten his school books to a roller skate with his belt, sit on it and career down the hill to school. This would have been in the 1940s in England! Perhaps he deserves the crown!

Resident Evil 4 - Wii Edition Review

Resident Evil 4 is a horror FPS game that does things differently compared to the other Resident Evil games.

You play as Leon Kennedy, a survivor of the Raccoon City incident that occurred during the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3. He now works for that government and is sent on a mission of find and rescue the President's daughter who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult. There's a sighting of the President's daughter in an isolated village in Europe and Leon investigates. While he is there the villagers start attacking him for an unknown reason so Leon has to find the President's daughter and find out the secret of the village.

There are no zombies this time around. I know what you're probably thinking. 'But its a Resident Evil game, the only thing you do is shoot zombies'. Yes, that is true but they have been replaced by something so original (/sarcasm) that it will make you think, 'Wow, why didn't I think of that.' Possessed humans, fully equipped with pitchforks, axes, knifes, other whatnot that has a sharp end and dynamite sticks.

Gone are the absolutely horrible (and somehow awesome) 'frozen' camera angles. Instead of the camera pointing at you in some awkward position, the camera is in an over-the-shoulder position which is alright but it seems like its been done, which it has, many times before.

Almost the entire game is an escort mission. I hate escort missions especially if they make the NPC who's following you a complete idiot. Unfortunately sometimes in this game, your partner does something so stupid that it makes you not want to care about her and just push her into a mob of charging bloodthirsty villagers.

The guns in this game range from pathetic to freaking' awesome. You start off with a handgun and, if you are like me and chose the easy mode (which I'm pretty sure is Wii exclusive), a shotgun. You eventually get a sniper rifle that is hopeless in a close-up situation, a rocket launcher and a few different types of grenades like the hand and flash grenade.

The enemies are good and bad at the same time. The case for the game says that the enemies work together but I've never seen them once perform this feat. The enemies react differently to where you shoot them. Shoot them in the feet and they stumble to the ground. Shoot them in the arm and they drop their weapon. Shoot them in the head and they die, sometimes.

Ammo is everywhere in this game. They are in boxes, the enemies drop it but you can't buy them from the salesman who looks like one of 'them' and will turn on you at any moment. When you run out of ammo, you are screwed. This time you have a knife if you run out of ammo so you aren't as screwed as you would be if you ran out of ammo in any other Resident Evil game.

The whole game takes some advantage to the Wii's motion sensing capabilities. You aim using the wiimote, slice the knife by shaking the wiimote and that's actually it but I don't blame the lack of motion sensing abilities because that's really all you can do with it.

In short, this is another Resident Evil game, just revamped with a whole new way to play. I highly suggest buying it and keeping it.

New Dance and Ballet Resolutions - Get Some Tips For an Extra Advantage

We've all had ballet corrections that do not seem to ever go away. We may understand perfectly how ballet positions and ballet movements should be. We understand how the body should mechanically do something, yet it can be frustrating when the body we're in just does not get it right after much trying.

What is the most frequent correction you got last year? Why isn't it fixed? There is a reason, relating to one of the following.

** Posture
** Flexibility
** Alignment
** Strength and reflexes
** Turnout
** Tension

For example, if you stand sideways to a mirror, legs parallel and straight, core area held a little, do your ankles/knees/hips/shoulders/ears stack up, with natural spinal curves kept? If not, is an area not stacked because it is too tight or too lose? Can the core muscles hold without strain showing in the neck or shoulders? Posture has a lot to do with tension, flexibility, strength, and understanding. Correct posture leads to correct alignment in many ballet positions. Fix if needed! Study, search for information.

Turnout involves strength, flexibility and tension. And understanding what true turnout is. Incorrect turnout affects posture, increases tension, reduces flexibility and distorts alignment. There is a book called Tune Up Your Turnout by Deborah Vogel that is a good myth-buster, and something every dancer can use. You can figure out a lot by yourself, with the right information. The trick is that you need to get your body to do something, from an ideal concept.

All of the above factors affect the rest, but which one underlies your never-ending correction?

Do you understand the mechanics behind the ballet position/movement/step you are trying to improve? If not, find out the details you need to know!

I believe that if you understand all the aspects of one basic thing in ballet (anatomy, mechanics, technique, style, physical requirements), something super-simple, (I didn't say easy) like standing in fifth position, you will understand a great deal about many other things in ballet.

Another example of getting more anatomical, mechanical and technical details of one factor in ballet technique is, strengthening the sole of the foot. Understanding the foot, and how to strengthen exclusively the foot muscles, not only leads to superior strength in dancing in pointe shoes, but will refine allegro, balance, landing from jumps and releves on pointe, and lots more. All this is covered in The Perfect Pointe Book, just to name one of many professionally written dance manuals.

Try selecting one recurring correction, and make a new resolution to search understanding all possible aspects of it. I believe that will affect several technical roadblocks that you may have. I think you'll gain an extra advantage and progress faster in the New Year.

DS Vs Wii - Which Nintendo to Choose?

Most companies would be happy to have one hit product, Nintendo currently has two the DS and the Wii. The Nintendo Dual Screen is a hugely popular portable gaming device while the Nintendo Wii is arguably the best console on the market at the moment - certainly the sales volume shows its popularity.

But if you had to choose one either the DS or the Wii which one?

My recommendation is the Wii. I've owned both and the Wii is much more fun for just a $100 more. You will pay slightly more for the games as well, but the depth and playability of those games is more than worth the extra money. The interaction Wii remote ensure you don't just sit there and veg out like you do with DS.

The Dual Screen is innovative in its own right combining a hard (bottom) and soft (top) screen. The soft top screen is interactive responding to the DS pen touch, meaning DS games have another level of game compared to other compact consoles. However after going through two DS and having both of the touch screens die - this is also one of the DS greatest weakness, particularly with children. The DS is simply not tough enough to handle children, no matter how many screen protectors, cases, covers, etc you use. The DS one advantage over the Wii is that it is portable and you can take it anywhere. Its size being even small than the average ladies purse. It fits comfortably in the pocket. That however it where is advantage ends.

The Nintendo Wii screen is as big as your T.V. and now with Plasmas and LCD's all the go, most people in the West have a large T.V., particularly thanks to these products crashing in price. This is gives the Wii a great display to make the most of the gaming experience. Thanks to its small size the Wii console fits into any living or media room, in fact its so small you barely notice it at all. The Wii remotes and nunchucks are tougher than the DS, especially thanks to the soft plastic covers that come with the remotes. This means when sweat and grime build up - and it does - instead of cleaning the whole remote you remove the cover and wash it and let it dry. The batteries in the Wii remote are double AA's and it pays to use rechargeable ones and have a charger nearby or buy the numerous accessories with charging docks so it can charge up while you sleep.

The other thing about the Wii is its more social. You can have up to four players (though of course this means more cost in buying more remotes). Some would argue the DS has this multiplayer ability as well thanks to its wireless connections - but that means more DS machines and usually each player has had to have brought the games as well entailing more expense. The Wii can have 4 players all off the same game and console though with the more interactive games this can mean it gets crowded in the living room.

If you have you choose between the DS and the Wii - my advice go the Wii, unless you plan to travel a lot.

What is the Nintendo DSi?

The Nintendo DSi hand held gaming console heralds the first major advancement of the companies' popular Dual Screen format since the DS Lite was issued in March 2006. The DSi is scheduled for a November 1st2008 release in Japan with American and European editions following in Spring 2009. The console was announced at the Nintendo Conference which was held in Tokyo, Japan on October 2nd 2008 and it is the third version of the DS console to be issued.

The console boasts a number of specifications and features which differentiate it from its predecessor the most obvious of which is the addition of two cameras, one of the cameras is positioned on the internal hinge and points at the user, whilst the other camera is more instantly visible as it is located on the outer shell of the unit. Despite the addition of the cameras the overall size of the DSi has been reduced, it is 12% slimmer than the DS Lite.

The DSi screens are larger than on previous models measuring 3.25 inches as opposed to the 3 inch screens on the DS lite, the speakers have also been tweaked allowing for superior sound quality. Elsewhere you will find minor modifications such as the power switch has been replaced by a power button and it is now positioned next to the bottom left hand side of the touch screen.

An exciting addition is the SD card slot, this allows for external storage of images and downloaded software and facilitates the playback of AAC format audio. However such a feature has come at a cost as the much loved GBA (Game Boy Advance) slot has been removed meaning that this console has no GBA backwards compatibility either with the games or any related accessories which require the slot to function.

Another plus point of the DSi is the fact that it ships with its own internal flash memory and built in web browser, it is also possible to download games from an online store entitled DSWare Shop, these games can be stored on to the console for later enjoyment and can be purchased using Nintendo Points, the price structure for these titles are 200, 500 or 800 points although some applications will be free of charge.

Available in a choice of matte white or black the Nintendo DSi will soon find itself locked in combat with Sony's recent PSP upgrade the PSP 3000 and only time will tell if the new look DS console will have enough pulling power to entice those looking for a hand held gaming console to buy.

Desperate, with mere days left to my second wedding, I persuade my chic younger sister to help me find something discrete and sleek, not frothy and fluffy. Mimi lined-up Beverly Hills and Newport Beach shops, then kissed her finger-tips like a 5-Star Chef, "You'll have the perfect confection tomorrow."

The next day, filled with relief, and outfitted in pristine white pique and Chanel sunglasses I pick-up Mimi up in a shiny white convertible ready to zip this task off my to-do list.

"Slight detour," Mimi hops in wearing a pink shift, with her long blond hair in a ponytail. "The dog died and we have to pick it up at the vet's and bury it in Nana's backyard." Her charm bracelet tinkles as she slams the car door. "It shouldn't take too long." Mimi pushes in a Beach Boys CD and fast-forwards to, California Girls. I turn-on the ignition and look at her, dumbfounded. "What?" She shrugs. "He was a incontinent rescue dog who enjoyed a long, spoiled life," she surfs her hand out. "Go."

At the whitewashed cinderblock building, a teenager with an IPod and greasy hair pushes an aluminum cart to the car. Buddy the dog is on the cart wrapped in visquine and stiff as a silver drinks' tray. His tail points out like the directional signal.

The fellow whistles to Jimmie Hendrix and angles the dog onto the small back seat, then gives the car two loud pats and us a half-salute.

We arrive at our grandmother's house and walk-in with the shrink-wrapped dog. "Don't you girls look lovely," Nana says, eyeing our package.

"We're off to Beverly Hills to find Suzanne a wedding dress. And, Buddy died." Mimi flips the stereo to Aunt Simmie's favorite Frank Sinatra record. "Since I don't have a yard, thought I'd bury him in that dirt patch by the alley," she nods out the picture window.

"Don't you dare!" Aunt Simmie rockets-up from the sofa and waves her just lit Menthol Cool towards legions of imaginary beasts, "Animals will dig it up!" she screeches.

"Simmie." I shake my head softly and use the half-pleading, reasonable coo reserved for crazy people and men. "We can't drive around with a dead dog in this heat."

"Oh, let them, Sim," Nana's tone underscored it's such a trifle. But then, she'd let us bury Godzilla and George Bush together if our dresses subtly referenced Jackie-O.

"The dog will dissolve into the water table! Is that what you want? Bits of Buddy floating in Father O'Reilly's daiquiri when he visits?" Simmie harrumphs at the three of us realizing she's outnumbered. "Fine," she takes a drag off her cigarette. "Shovel's in the garage."

An hour later, dusty, disheveled, and faintly scented with formaldehyde, Mimi and I stop for pasta in Westwood. She buys a Movie Star Map from a street vendor and studies it at the restaurant table as the waiter brings our wine.

"I've always wanted to do this," she giggles. "Hmmm. Cher, Barbara Streisand, Robert frickin' de Niro!" She turns the map over and knocks red wine across her dress and mine. Across from us Jacqueline Smith from Charlie's Angels offers me a "too bad" grimace.

Back in the car, with bright red splashes of wine across our bodices and resembling escaped extras from a soap-opera scene, we weave through Bel Air, as Mimi navigates from the map.
